Final Major Project Proposal

For my Final Major Project I wish to develop and produce a children’s book.

When I look back to what first sparked my interest in drawing and painting, I am always reminded of the illustrations that were in the books I read as a child. Creating images that can encourage and influence children into picking up a book and wanting to read it is something I find both rewarding and inspiring. With this in mind, I wish to write my own narrative with the premise of creating an illustrated story with which children of a young age can engage with. As my main objective is to concentrate on making the illustrations, I will keep my narrative straightforward and simple with perhaps an underlying educational value that children can learn from. The book, however, must also appeal to a much wider audience than just targeting children. I must consider that adults – parents, relatives, friends, and teachers – are the ones who purchase a book for a child, so it must be just as appealing to them as it is to a child.

During my creative process, I intend to establish an efficient working practise by keeping illustrated documents in which I can record my ideas, my development process, and my experimentation methods. By demonstrating a range of different thoughts and approaches to the task in hand, I hope to come across alternative solutions to my illustrations that perhaps I would not have encountered when sticking to just one motivation, or medium, or style.

I shall also keep an ongoing research file on practitioners/image makers that may also influence any solutions to my objective. By looking at what’s already on the market in the area of children’s books, I hope to gain a better understanding of what is relevant, what works, and what doesn’t work on a commercial scale.
